Title: How To Ping?
Article Date: 08-12-2001Do you know what is ping and how to ping?
What happen if my Internet connection got ‘stunt’? By the way, what is really meant by ‘Internet connection got stunt’? It mean you don’t receive any bytes from your ISP for a long time, like 5 minutes, 10 minutes…And how to know whether if I got ‘stuck’? Well it is fairly simple. When you got connected to your ISP, you can see there are two small computers as the tray icon that will animate (shining) to response to the incoming bytes and outgoing bytes. ![]()
If there is no animate between the two computers icon that means you don’t receive any bytes from your ISP, so how to overcome it? Well you have to ping your ISP. Click on your “Start” button, go to “Run” and type ‘ping yourisp’ in the “Open” field. For example your ISP is ‘abcdefg.net’ then you should type ‘ping adcdefg.net’. Now click on “OK” button, a console windows will popup to execute the ping. When the ping finish, the console windows will automatically close. You can run the ping how many times you like, until you get the response back from your ISP.

Did you know that you could also ping the web page that not giving you the response? Well you can, in some case, for example you open the high graphical web page, or the web site in heavy traffic, and you just stuck, no response giving to you from that web site’s host, then you can ping them by repeat the same method as mentioned before but this time type ‘ping www.abcdefg.com’
Please refer to the table below for summary:
Step | Action | Value |
| 1 | Click Start button | |
| 2 | Click Run | ping yoursip.net (ping ISP) or ping www.abcdefg.com (ping web site) |
If the ping doesn't work, simply restart your computer, and reconnect to Internet, this should back to normal.
