Title: Speed up the modem / Internet connection
Article Date: 07-22-2001If you are using modem to connect to Internet, you might want to know how to speed up the modem so you can connect to Internet with the fastest way and receive the highest rate. Tip of this month is to teach you how to set your modem configurations so it can be perform in optimize.
First open your Control Panel, and double click the Modemsto open it. You can see there are 2 tab sheets, which is “General” and “Diagnostics”. In the General sheet, click on the “Properties” button. You can see another tab pop up with 3 tab sheets. In the general sheet, set the “Maximum speed” to be 115200 and check the box “Only connect at this speed”. Next click on the “Connection” tab sheet, set the “Data bits” to be 8, “Parity” to be None and “Stop bits” to be 1. Still in the “Connection” sheet, now click on the “Port Settings…” button and check the box “Use FIFO buffers (required 16550 compatible UART)”. Set the “Receive Buffer” to be High and “Transmit Buffer” to be Maximum, and click on OK button. Now you should back to “Connection” sheet, click on the “Advanced…” button, another tab sheet pup up. Uncheck the box “use error control” and check the box “use flow control”. Under the“use flow control” click on the radio button “software (XON/XOFF)”. In the “Modulation type” panel, set it to be Standard and from the “Extra settings” panel, type “S11=40” to the edit box. Now click on OK.
Now back to “Connection” sheet, we have done with it, so click on “OK”. Now we back to the first sheet, just click on “Close” button to save the settings we have changed.
So far we have done with the Modems but doesn’t mean we have for done all the thing, we still have to make so changes on “Dial Up Networking”
Open the Control Panel, and open the “Dial Up Networking”, right click on your ISP (where you use it to connect to internet), click on Properties, you can see there are 6 tab sheets. Click on “Networking”, chose “PPP: Internet, Windows 95/98/2000/NT, Windows ME” (value depend on your OS) for the “Type of Dial-Up Server”. Don’t forget to check the box of “Enabled software compression”. From the “Allowed network protocols” panel, uncheck the NetBEUI, IPX/SPX Compatible and check the TCP/IP. Click on OK to save the settings.
Now we have done for everything, restart your computer and try to connect to Internet, you should see the different. Enjoy!Please refer to the table below for summary:

There are some software that help you to optimize the modem if you are bother to do it yourself, those software are ModemUp! and NetSonic. ModemUp! is totally free but NetSonic require you to input some information to help them on surveying something, but generally, there are FREE!
